The History of Glen's Bakery & Restaurant

For generations, Glen’s Bakery has been a beloved part of the Crescent City community, serving as more than just a bakery — it has been a gathering place filled with tradition, family, and hometown memories. The story began in 1947, when Glen Young returned from the Army with only $400 and a dream of opening a bakery on the Northern California coast. Together with his family, he established what would become one of Crescent City’s most recognizable local businesses.

Located in the heart of downtown Crescent City, Glen’s quickly became known for fresh baked goods, welcoming service, and recipes that kept customers coming back year after year. Through changing times in Del Norte County — from the booming lumber and fishing years to the quieter modern era — the bakery remained a constant in the community. Families stopped in for morning pastries, cookies after school, birthday cakes, and holiday traditions that became part of life on the North Coast.

Over the decades, Glen’s Bakery earned a reputation not only for quality baking, but for the warmth and familiarity that only a family-owned business can provide. Many local residents grew up with memories tied to Glen’s — whether sharing coffee with friends, picking up favorite cookies, or celebrating milestones with treats made from recipes passed down through generations. Even today, Glen’s continues to represent the spirit of Crescent City: hardworking, welcoming, and deeply rooted in community.

More than seventy years after its founding, Glen’s Bakery remains a symbol of tradition and hometown pride — proof that good food, strong family values, and genuine hospitality never go out of style.
